BMW N20 Timing Chain Replacement
These engines notoriously suffer from timing chain problems. A problem worth dealing with preventatively.
These chains stretch over time, leading to them snapping suddenly, potentially bending valves and definitely causing a breakdown. The other problems old chains cause is the old timing guides breaking down as they become brittle over time. As they break down they drop into the oil sump and get pulled into the oil pickup, this causes major oil pressure problems and leads to full engine failure.
We are proud to offer this service same day whilst you wait from just £895 inc VAT. Using the OE timing chain supplier, with all new consumable bolts used. The process takes about 6 hours and comes with our 3 year warranty. We often see cars fitted with cheaper aftermarket chains which are already failing after just a few years, we will never cheap out on parts, we offer full peace of mind with all our timing chain repairs.
Please note that if our technicians find missing pieces from the old timing guide, we will strongly recommend that the sump is dropped to remove these old pieces. This will be an additional cost but will save your engine from oil starvation in the long run.
More information on how to tell if your engine needs a replacement chain and what could happen if you don’t replace your chain can be found here.
N20 timing chain that was recently replaced by Element Performance. This car came in with no warning light, cold start noise or chain slack and only on 80k miles.
This car was minutes away from engine failure with the guide snapped off and even twisted as you can see in the third image. Every single N20 engine is affected by timing chain issues, it is always worth getting your chain replaced sooner rather than later to avoid engine failure, when caught early enough the sump may not even have to be removed to capture all of these missing guide pieces, saving an additional cost as well as peace of mind.
